Forum down time today

Postby chris Hodgson » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:35 pm

We've had a hard drive fail on the server this afternoon, so had to reboot server with backup drive. Things will take about an hour to get back up to speed, but we are back

Was just about to go and jump off a cliff. With my camera of course.
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to his country for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'

Was a bit bottom twitching when I got the call to say HDD had failed in server. But thankfully we have backup systems, as well as a local monthly backup I download in case that whole thing blows up lol

 I bet there were a few people on the internet getting all excitable because we went down for 2 hours lol
2 hours down time to replace a faulty HDD, reboot server, run CHKDSK, fire up all the services and be up and running again, ain't too bad really  I do like it when everything is UK based, and one phone call can fix an issue in no time. Think 2 hours is the longest I've ever been down, in 6 years of being with this hosting company. It actually took longer to fire back up this time, than it did 5 years ago when the server actually exploded in flames on them lol But that's down to data being checked, rather than just swapping server. EVERYTHING was lost on that day. But lucky old me had local backups, which I uploaded and restored to switched server, and we were up again within an hour  Other websites were not so lucky, because they either didn't pay for full daily independent backups, or didn't backup themselves. That lead to UKhost4u getting bad reviews, when it was the site owners faults for not backing up, or paying for someone to do it.

Yeah, we are on a 2 hour rotation for database backups, and 4 hour rotation for files. I also do a monthly backup of the lot to local machine, just in case ;)
