Dark NEF files

Postby Jimbolarue » Tue Feb 14, 2012 3:01 pm

Hi guys, I've just started to mess with raw files on my Nikon D90.

I have my camera to fine + raw. The two different files markedly different in terms of lighting.

The NEF files are a good deal darker. It has been suggested that an in camera setting might be the culprit.

Have you any idea how I might correct this?

Thank you.

Hi Jimbo
I'm no expert and others will prob answer more succinctly later but..
jpg will always "pop" a little more as they are kind of processed in the camera.

Watch out in case you loaded any presets in RAW and forgot about them
I think presets are the last button along top on right.

and yes...take a look at the menu for in camera.
I dont have a d90 but its fairly easy to find as I remember from my d80

Any presets used if any, will only show up if you open in Nikon software, So if you open in anything else, you will only get a basic RAW image. It may be that the jpeg is having additional brightness added to it during the process stage by the ickle japanese man within your camera

On occasion when i used RAW+jpeg my RAW's where always a wee tad darker :)

Thank you guys for your your input.

Carlb, what you say makes sense. When loaded into NX2 they look a lot better so,I don't think I need worry.

Thank you both once again.

My D90 is exactly the same Jimbo and I gave up on jpegs and now only shoot in RAW.

Jpegs will always look better than raw simply because they are as Doug said, processed in the camera so in effect its a finished image. Raw on the other hand( as the name implies) is a file of raw photographic data and you always have to process a raw file using some form of imag processing software. It is simply impossibe to get a raw file to be a complete image right out of camera unless you the best tog in the world and he or she doesnt exist. as far as I know everyone who shoots raw does some form of processing on it- beit changing it from raw to jpeg, or other processing but quite simply, raw images have a higher detail and content than a jepg and can be processed better than a jepeg. Once you over expose a jpeg as a rule you cant get the detail back. Within reason, by using raw a latitude of contro over exposure errors can be done.

That being said though.....you CAN if you use photoshop, process Jpegs in camera raw too...so you can within reason tweak a wonky jepg.
Please dont hold back.Im here to learn and to learn you have to listen to the mistakes you have made,so tell me!
