Lights for Background and Subject

Postby brothersanju » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:40 am

Hello Champs,

I need some help to decide the lightings for my background and subject.

Can you please suggest some and provide few links.

My background is white and I'm shooting photography.

I'm a starter.

Regards
San

How long is a piece of string, It would help if you stated what the subject is it could be anything from a candle to a car, what equipment you have and what you want to achieve.

Your asking an impossible question if truth be told. We dont know what your shooting, what with and in what location. we dont know the lighting that is there a;lready. We dont know what kind of look your after. I hate to say this but you cant run before you learn to walk. Its taken me three years to get where I am and I dont know nealy 10% of lighting. what I suggest you do is get onto Amazon and find some really good books such as understanding exposure by Bryan Patterson or the Master lighting guide which will teach you the basics of exposure and flash technique. I am afraid if your thinking of offering a service right now as a product photographer- or even trying to sell your own products using product photography you really DO need to know your stuff or you will come across as strictly amateur and drive any potential business away.

Be realistic and do the research first. you will be better served by getting good books or maybe a decent studio course.

I think the reply above is a little harsh especially if he is a beginner, we all have to start somewhere but as I said you need to tell people what you want to do, also reading is ok if and I say IF you can understand it, which is why EVERY photograph I post like the one below I also post a photograph of the setup to help people.

Might want to word that better as it looks like your taking the micky :? though I find it amusing ;)

Big small, round tall, people or products? indoors or out?

Automated or manual? also, what kit do you already have???? as if you only have something like a compact none of the above may matter as it wont be connectible with any accessories.

Actually I skipped over the background bit as I assume he means a "white background" as in my setup above but "shooting photography" was a laugh, well duh ! sorry just found it ammusing to add to a "photographic" forum, that is what we all do :)

Howere I am NOT too quick to judge as some are, I "think" no disrespect, but some people who ask questions may not be able to "word" things correctly, may like me be dyslexic, may like MY son have "learning difficulties", perhaps we should NOT be so quick to judge others, there are many and I mean many here and on other forums whos' spelling and grammar I could happily correct.

Nothing wrong with asking questions on here but your initial question is a bit truncated and open to interpretation which is sure to confuse both you and us. Before putting finger to keyboard compose the question in your head and think how it would be seen from our point of view. They're a knowledgeable bunch on here and eager to impart their wisdom to us lesser toggers :D

I 100% agree with you here, and that reminds me of a saying a manager told me years ago.

"Speaking without thinking is like shooting without aiming, you always miss the target", however remember some of us do very well, there are many people such as I who have an office based background and are able to compose a letter, however there are many who leave school unable to read or do basic maths.

You are right though.

If my reply came across as harsh it wasnt my intention and if thats how it came out, Im sorry. Its just that asking how to shoot with studio opens a can of worms up and where do you start. I still say reading good books on the subject would help though.
