The old and the new

Postby chris Hodgson » Wed Feb 16, 2011 11:44 pm

Inspired by this link posted by Bob Here, this can be an ongoing challenge for all members.
The idea is to recreate an old photograph (at least 50 years old), attempting to get the same angle and field of view as the original shot. So if you are going out for the day, off on holiday, out for a walk, or fancy documenting the change in a local landmark, why not give it a go.
You can use your own original photo, or source one on the internet, then hit the road and recreate that image.
This isn't a very good example, as I had to find an old shot to match mine. But it gives you an idea of what I mean ;)

I was quite surprised to see how much of the castle has been reconstructed/filled in in the last 50 years :?:

I agree with you Chris, I have lived with the view of Sandle Castle from my front window for 31 years, and cannot remember it looking like the shot in No1. I used to visit the site regulary with my children who used to enjoy scrambling up the ramparts. When I recently walked around Pugneys Country Park and up to the castle earlier this year I was amazed at the development work that has been done there with the wooden staging and information centre, etc.

There is a Sandal Castle Community Association which was set up last year (http://sandal.org.uk/page9.htm) and as you can see the attached link, this provides more information and photographs.

Hadn't realised you are a local Gordon  Seems to have changed a hell of a lot between the two shots, doesn't it.

There is going to be some work done on the Nottingham Midland Railway Station so I thought I'd get a photo before they ruin it. They have a bad habit of doing that in Nottingham.

This is a postcard dated 1909

I did my best to get the exact angle but, unfortunately it is now impossible. Where the original photographer stood is now a pub. I'm not that far out though. What do you think?

I won't be able to get that photo of the Midland Station soon. Just discovered that the new tram system is going right past it and that there are plans to destroy some 19th C buildings on Arkwright Street which is just to the rear of where the photo was taken from. :o

Good job! I really hate it when a structure that's been standing for so long gets ruined by "improvements". Which reminds me, there's a school in my town that's going to be "renovated". It has been standing there ever since my grandma can remember, so I'll probably take a picture before they ruin it. ;)
