If you were going to upgrade and had the choice of the D700 or the D3 which would you choose and why? is it worth the almost double price tag for the D3?

Hi Jayne
if I had the money that a d3 would cost I would still buy the D700.reason being that it has the same functions as a D3,same quality etc.the only things I can see different about the D3 is it has a bigger body( which you can replicate with an MB D10 from ebay for 60 quid) an extra LCD panel and duel card slots-one of which cant be used for shooting on but is a form of storage. The D700 in tests against a D3 at ken rockwell came up the same quality and everything wise.TBH Id get the D700 and spend the other 1.5k on a really good fast lens to add to the ones you have already.
one other reason I wouldnt go d3 is that it doesnt have CLS on it like the D700.You have to buy a wifi controller for your off camera flash.
oh..and I wouldnt buy one cos A0 I cant afford it and B) Id be able to borrow one from uni

oh and...I shot with a canon 5d Mk II at the wedding with a 100-400 IS lens and though its a great cam, having tried a D700 I think that the D700 is better

I ummed and aahed on this question.
The shutter life is better on the D3. The extra LCD - not bothered. I already had a grip, so wasnt bothered about the body shape etc etc - dual card slots - nah. 100% viewfinder vs 95% - not worth the ££ extra!
However, the D700 wins in some other areas - it has sensor cleaning built in - the D3 doesnt, and the FF sensors are dust magnets. Also - the D700 has extra flexibility on batteries - (The D3 only uses the el4 one, whereas the D700 with grip can use multi el3, or AAs, or both)
IQ - no difference, they use the same sensor.
Bottom line for me- D700 plus a pro grade lens plus change, for the same money as D3 alone, and get the sensor cleaning built in. That seemed better use of the hard-earned to me!
Havent regretted that purchase for a moment.

I had the same thoughts a couple of months back...
when all said and done the D3 is a little bit more robust but is in essence a D700 with integrated battery grip??
save the money and buy g;lass
Nuff said... it rocks

The popup flash on the D700 is also usefull as a commander for he Nikon CLS ( Nikon creative lighting system) On the D3 you have to use a flash gun as a master instead.
If I was shooting in very harsh conditions I would consider the D3 for it's better weather sealing, other than that the D700 is a whole lot more flexible for the reasons already mentioned
